The football world was abuzz with excitement as Ademola Lookman was announced as the winner of the CAF African Player of the Year award. However, amidst the celebrations, a controversy emerged involving Nigerian footballer Victor Osimhen.

Accusations began circulating on social media that Osimhen had failed to congratulate Lookman on his win.

In response to the accusations, Osimhen took to social media to address the issue.

Osimhen expressed his disappointment at the accusations, stating that they were "unfair" and "misleading." He emphasized that he had always supported Lookman and was happy to see him receive the award.

As noted by sports journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana;

"Social media has created a culture of instant gratification, where people expect immediate responses and reactions. This can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations."

In Osimhen's case, his failure to immediately congratulate Lookman on social media was seen as a snub by some fans. However, as Osimhen himself pointed out, he had indeed congratulated Lookman privately and was genuinely happy for his fellow player.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of context and nuance in social media interactions. As observed by psychologist, Dr. Linda Papadopoulos;

"Social media can be a breeding ground for miscommunication and misunderstandings. It's essential to consider the context and potential implications of our online interactions."
